Mission

PLU seeks to educate students for lives of thoughtful inquiry, service, leadership and care – for other people, for their communities, and for the earth.

Pacific Lutheran University is a mid-size university, with 3,500 students, located in the south part of Tacoma, WA. Academically, PLU offers a unique blend of academically rigorous liberal arts and professional programs (36 majors and 42 minors). Students develop skills in decision making, analysis, communication and reasoning that prepare them for a lifetime of success – both in their careers and in service to others.

PLU is dedicated to developing ethical, educated, thinking leaders by challenging students to identify and ask questions of meaning and value in their own lives.

PLU has set out three pathways to academic distinction:
-Global education and service to the world
-Student-faculty research and creative projects
-Helping students discern meaning and purpose in their lives

In addition to an academically rich experience that includes a multitude of study away options, an International Honors program, academic internships, and undergraduate research, students have opportunities to be involved in close to 100 different student clubs and organizations, student leadership, NCAA Division III Varsity athletics, and robust music, theater, and arts programs.
